Alumni Ask a Librarian - AOL Instant Message (Chat) Installation

If you do NOT already have Instant Messenger on your computer, follow the instructions below to Download and Install the necessary software.

To download Instant Messenger:

1. Go to the Instant Messenger  (http://www.aim.com/) web site.
2. Click on the yellow Download Now button.
3. Complete the Instant Messenger Registration form and
   click on  the Continue button.
   Note:  Finding a unique screen name may take several tries.
4. Once you are registered with Instant Messenger, a web page will appear with further instructions. After you click on the Windows button, a dialog box will open and ask you where to save Instant Messenger. We suggest that you save it to your Desktop (although you may choose any directory you wish). Instant Messenger will now download the software to your computer.
5. Congratulations! You have downloaded Instant Messenger.
   Now you must install it.
   Note: AOL will send you an e-mail message to confirm your registration. You must reply within 48 hours or your Screen Name and Password will be deleted from Instant Messenger and you will have to register again.

To install Instant Messenger:

1. Go to the directory where you saved Instant Messenger (probably on your Desktop). As the instructions from Instant Messenger's Step 1 state, double-click on the installation file (Install_AIM.exe). This will initiate an Installation Wizard.
2. Your screen may turn blue. Do not be alarmed. You are in the Installation Wizard. Read the information provided at each step, then click the "Yes" or "Next" button.
3. Congratulations! You have installed Instant Messenger. The Instant Messenger Sign On window should appear.

4. Once installed, add PepAlumni to your Buddy List and IM us with your research questions.
