Pepperdine University Libraries Offer Enhanced Services
The Pepperdine University Libraries are pleased to offer an array of new services designed to assist students and faculty with their learning, teaching, and research needs. Enhancements include new computers, a new electronic course reserve system, virtual reference service, federated database searching, an improved article linker service, expedited book delivery service, and an enhanced online catalogue.
“The Library is central to learning, teaching and research on campus,” commented Dean of Libraries, Mark Roosa. “With the addition of new computers and services to the Library, it is our aim to streamline access to the growing world of print and electronic information while enhancing the visitor experience.”
New Computers
To ensure that student needs are fully met, 20 new high-speed, ultra-sharp, flat-screen computers with DVD and CD burners and large-screen monitors have been installed in Payson Library and are ready for use. Four Windows-based laptop computers and two Apple G4 laptops are also available to students for use in the Library. Six computers have been installed on the second floor of the library in the journal/periodical area and two computers have been installed in the stacks area on the first floor.
Electronic Course Reserves
To facilitate access to learning materials, the Pepperdine University Libraries are offering a web-based course reserve system called ERes. ERes provides faculty members with a web page where students in each class may access journal articles, book chapters, PowerPoint lectures, case studies, lecture notes, graphs, and slides, 24 hours a day, seven days a week from their dormitory rooms or from off-campus. Online reserve materials are password protected and may only be viewed by students enrolled in a specific course. The ERes system is also a copyright management system, assuring that materials placed online are copyright compliant. To use Electronic Course Reserves, go to the Pepperdine University Libraries website and click the Electronic Reserves link.
Virtual Reference
The Pepperdine University Libraries are pleased to offer electronic reference service via AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). AIM is a popular instant messaging program that enables users to chat in real time with Pepperdine librarians. Using AIM, librarians will guide students in database use, provide links to useful web sites, and answer reference questions. This service will be particularly useful to students in the international and distance education programs. Those who wish to ask a question virtually may go to the Pepperdine University Libraries website and click on the Ask a Librarian link.
Federated Database Searching
To provide students and faculty with seamless access to content in the hundreds of databases and catalogs offered, the Pepperdine University Libraries introduces a federated search service beginning this fall. Federated searching allows students and faculty to search across a variety of databases and catalogs using a single web interface. Searchers may choose to search databases within a certain subject discipline or they may pick out individual databases and search them simultaneously. Search results appear quickly from a variety of electronic resources, including databases and library catalogs. Those who wish to use the new federated database search service may go to the Pepperdine University Libraries and enter their search terms in the search box which appears on the Libraries' internal webpages.
Article Linker
To support student and faculty research, the Pepperdine University Libraries are delighted to offer, Article Linker, which is accessible within the Libraries' databases and provides full-text linking options to non-full-text journal articles.
Expedited Book Delivery
The Pepperdine University Libraries are pleased to introduce a new rapid book delivery service, which provides students and faculty with access to books not owned by Pepperdine. To use this service, students and faculty fill out a short online Interlibrary Loan form and indicate that they desire rapid book delivery. The Libraries will make every effort to locate a copy of the book in a library participating in the rapid delivery network. Books requested this way are usually received within two to three days.
Enhanced Online Library Catalog
In order to help students and faculty locate relevant information quickly, the Pepperdine University Libraries' online library catalog, now includes a number of attractive enhancements, including book cover images, first chapters, annotations, and author notes for selected titles. Many of the recent books and DVDs purchased by the library feature this added content information.

Hurricane Katrina Donations
Announcement by Dean Baird, Dean, Seaver College:
Our heartfelt prayers go out to the members of our community who have friends or families living in the Gulf Coast region that have been impacted by Katrina's devastation. In the face of this tragedy, we are honored with the opportunity to welcome 15 new students from Tulane, Loyola and Dillard University to Seaver College and the Pepperdine community.
Many of you have inquired about how you can get involved and assist Katrina victims. In the near future, you will be receiving a Public Service Announcement that shares more information about Pepperdine relief efforts. Here's an opportunity for you to be involved in an important Seaver College fund raising initiative. Through our relationship established by the Pepperdine Volunteer Center in conjunction with the Los Angeles Dream Center, we have an opportunity to reach out to 250 - 300 Katrina evacuees. For those of you who are not familiar with the LA Dream Center, it is a local ministry that reaches out to the poor and homeless population in downtown Los Angeles.
The Dream Center informed Pepperdine that there are currently 150 evacuees and 100 more people expected to arrive on Thursday. Since we already had students scheduled to visit the Dream Center on Saturday through Step Forward Day, this gives us a perfect opportunity to reach out to these Katrina evacuees. The LA Dream Center is requesting gift cards to help meet their great need. Seaver College will be collecting funds to provide a $50 gift card for each evacuee to assist with the difficult transition. On Saturday, 200 students will have the opportunity to spend time with Katrina evacuees and also present the gift cards to them on behalf of Seaver College and Pepperdine University.
We need your assistance in raising the funds needed for the gift cards that will be utilized for replacing personal items that have been lost. Here are the places on campus where you can donate today through Friday: HAWC front desk, SGA Office, Payson Library and in the Waves Café after convocation. There will also be an opportunity to donate on Saturday at Step Forward Day.
On Wednesday, September 28th, donations will also be collected during convocation as the Pepperdine community remembers the one month anniversary when Katrina hit the Gulf Coast.
