New Database: Gartner Research Services
Thanks to the generosity of Pepperdine's IT Department, we now have access to Gartner Research Services. Gartner is a leading information technology research and advisory company, delivering technology-related insight. Gartner Research reports cover analysis of computer hardware and software, information technology services, communications and networks, and semiconductor design and devices. The list of topic areas is very extensive and includes both current and emerging technologies and services used in major industry sectors such as banking, education, energy & utilities, government, healthcare providers, insurance, investment services, manufacturing, media, and retail. Some of the industry and markets data is not included in Pepperdine’s subscription and will not be accessible.

Scopus Quiz - Contest increases knowledge
Increase your knowledge of the Scopus database and enter to win an iPod Nano by taking the Scopus Quiz. The Scopus Quiz is open to Pepperdine students and faculty. Answers to the Quiz can be found by using Scopus, available on the Library's Web site. Scopus offers coverage of scientific, technical, medical and social science literature (14,000 titles), full text links directly from the results list, abstracts back to 1966, a full 10-year reference backfile, daily updates, innovative tools to help you refine your search to relevant results, and alerts for you to keep abreast of your research topic. The contest closes May 15, 2007.

New West LA Campus Library Video Acquisition
The West Los Angeles Graduate Campus library has acquired a new video entitled: Leadership: an Art of Possibility. Created by Ben and Roz Zander, this video presents a new definition of leadership where everyone can "become part of the song." The leader's job is described as a job of possibility, presenting the leaders as those who seek to lead by making others powerful. Offering an inside-out approach to leadership, this program provides an opportunity to discover how to transform oneself into a new way of being. Benjamin Zander has been the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic since its foundation in 1979. Rosamund Stone Zander is an executive coach and family systems therapist.

Library of America added to collection
The Library of America, which marks its 25th year of publication in 2007, was founded to undertake a historic endeavor: to help preserve the nation's cultural heritage by publishing America's best and most significant writing in durable and authoritative editions. Prepared to exacting editorial standards under the supervision of our finest scholars and critics, Library of America volumes feature definitive texts that, like the books themselves, will stand the test of time. Hailed as "the most important book-publishing project in the nation's history" (Newsweek), this award-winning series maintains America's most treasured writers in "the finest-looking, longest-lasting edition ever made" (The New Republic).
At the end of 2006, The Library of America Complete Collection consisted of 183 titles across a wide range of genres, including fiction, history, poetry, drama, essays, philosophy, travel writing, journalism, sermons, speeches, and slave narratives. From the writings of the Founding Fathers to the poetry of Walt Whitman and Robert Frost, from the journalism of the Civil Rights movement to the novels of Zora Neale Hurston and Philip Roth, from Baseball: A Literary Anthology to H.P. One-Stop Info Search Citation Management
One-Stop Info Search, our federated search solution, now includes an enhanced citation management feature with support for popular bibliographic citation managers, including RefWorks. Specifically, the enhancement provides the following new functionality:
- Marked List - Enables the easy selection and management of citations. This new feature will keep a running tally of records selected at the top of the page - and allows the user to move through the result set. In addition, the export process has been modified. Users will now see check boxes next to the citations, allowing them to select records for export while viewing the results list:
- Export/Save - Includes several options: 1-click Export to RefWorks; export in format compatible with ProCite and EndNote; save as HTML; or save as Plain Text:
- Email - Provides ability to email citations in a variety of useful formats, from a form within the One-Stop Info Search interface:
New: Works of Elizabeth Gaskell
This edition of the writings of Elizabeth Gaskell is the first to appear in almost a century. The quality and comprehensiveness do credit to Gaskell's growing stature as a major British author whose full importance for literary history did not become clear until the last quarter of the 20th century. For scholarly purposes this set replaces The Works of Mrs. Gaskell, ed. by A. W. Ward (known as the Knutsford edition, 1906), and the somewhat more complete "World's Classics" edition, The Novels and Tales of Mrs. Gaskell (1906-19), both of which concentrated on Gaskell's novels and short fiction. The present set surpasses the previous collections by including miscellaneous writings as well as novels, novellas, and short stories. New reference work: Encyclopaedia Judaica
Payson Library has acquired the print edition of the Encyclopaedia Judaica, winner of the 2007 Dartmouth Medal in recognition for distinguished achievement relating to the creation of works of reference resources. Thomson Gale, part of Thomson Learning, and Jerusalem-based Keter Publishing House’s Encyclopaedia Judaica, Second Edition includes more than 21,000 articles on Jewish life, culture, history and religion, written by a global team of subject-matter experts. This edition of the world-renowned Encyclopaedia incorporates more than three decades of changes and the latest scholarship, expanding the scope and relevance of the original work.
The editors of the second edition also sought to expand dramatically the coverage of the following areas:
- The role and contributions of women to Jewish life, history and culture
- The Bible, Biblical studies and Judaism of the classical era
- Jewish law, especially as applied in a modern Jewish state and with regard to current issues of faith and morals
- Holocaust studies
- Contributions of Jews to popular culture
The Encyclopaedia includes more than 600 maps, charts and tables and 168 pages of full-color photographs and other images, detailing the many aspects of Jewish life and culture. [Ref. DS102.8.E496 2007]
The Encyclopaedia Judaica is also available to Pepperdine Libraries' patrons as part of the Gale Virtual Reference Library.
