Pepperdine Libraries Assessing First Year Students’ Research Skills

During Fall 2012, Pepperdine University Libraries is administering the SAILS (Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy) Cohort Test to assess the information literacy skills of incoming undergraduate students.

The information literacy skills tested are based on the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education which address competencies such as: (1) determining the nature and extent of the information needed; (2) accessing needed information effectively and efficiently; (3) evaluating information and its sources critically and incorporating selected information into a knowledge base and value system; (4)  using information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose; and (5) understanding many of the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and accesses and uses information ethically and legally.

Data from the SAILS Test will enable the Library to assess students’ research strengths and weaknesses and to make evidence-based plans for its Information Literacy and Instruction Program.  Additionally, benchmark data from SAILS will allow the Library to see how Pepperdine students compare to students at other colleges and universities.
