Wireless Network Security Help Sheet
Starting June 10, 2005 (6 p.m.) all students/staff/faculty using laptops with wireless cards in Payson Library will have to login to gain Internet access to the wireless network.
To gain access you must follow some simple steps:
Before connecting
- If you use any network based applications (such as Yahoo chat, MSN chat, AOL Chat, etc.) you should take them out of your start up menu and disable them from automatically starting.
To Connect

Turn your computer on.

After it has booted up, open your web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape)
and try to go to a web page. -
The browser will automatically take you to the page displayed below.

Please type in your Pepperdine Network ID and password in the space provided.

Visiting guests of the University should go to step 9.

Click on Logon User.

You should now have Internet network access.

Guests should click “Logon as a Guest.” Guests will have access to most areas of the Internet and several Pepperdine websites such as the School of Law(http://law.pepperdine.edu), GSEP (http://gsep.pepperdine.edu), and GSBM.
Directions to Set Up Wireless Printing in Payson Library for Windows Laptops
For Academic Computing Lab Printers (on second floor of Payson Library):
- Click on the following link: Academic Computing Lab Printers.
- Select either HPLJ 4000 HAC #2 or HPLJ 4000 HAC #3.
- On the left hand side of the page, click on CONNECT. You will be asked whether you would like to add a connection to the specified printer.
- Select YES.
- The selected printer is now added to your computer.
Note: If you want to select color printing, there is another option in the printer list for the Academic Computing Lab, but the cost is 25 cents per page instead of the 5 cents per page monochrome.
Directions to Set Up Wireless Access with Airport in Payson Library for Macs
- Click on the Apple Icon located in the top left of the screen.
- Click on System Preferences.
- Select Network.
- In Show box, choose Airport.
- A list of networks will be displayed.
a. If Pepperdine is displayed, choose it. Either type Pepperdine in password or leave it blank.
b. If Pepperdine does not show up, create it. Either type Pepperdine in password or leave it blank.
Directions to Set Up Wireless Printing in Payson Library for Macs
- Click on the Apple Icon located in the top left of the screen.
- Select System Preferences.
- Select Print & Fax.
- Click on Add to add additional printers to your laptop.
- Click Set Up Printers.
- Check to ensure that Apple Talk is selected in the top field; if not click on the drop-down menu and select it. If connecting your laptop to the Payson First Floor printer, select Apple Talk Network in the bottom field. If connecting to any of the printers in the Seaver Computer Lab, ensure that Main Network is selected in the bottom field.
- Scroll down to select the printer you want to add.
a. If connecting to the Payson First Floor printer (under Apple Talk Network), click on PLS. Click Choose. Select hp Laser Jet 4250. Click on Add.
b. If connecting to the Seaver Computer Lab printers (under Apple Talk), scroll down to select the printer you want to add:
- Academic Computing Lab: HPLJ 4000 HAC #2 and HPLJ 4000 #3
- Academic Computing Lab Color Printer: HP Business Ink Jet 3000 PS
- Click on Manually select to locate the printer description file.

Select the appropriate printer model. If connecting to HPLJ 4250 PS, select Generic as the printer model.
Your laptop is now connected to the appropriate printer.

Reporting Problems Via E-Mail
Please contact the IT Help Desk. Your e-mail should contain the following information:In the Subject Line: a brief description of your problem.
In the Body of the Message: please describe in detail the exact problem or error message the you are receiving, what you have done, if anything to remedy the problem, your internet service provider's name, the version and brand of web browser software that you are using, and finally, your name and home and/or work telephone numbers.
Please Note:
If the problem that you are experiencing is isolated to you or your computer's configuration, a representative will contact you during business hours.
If the problem indicates a system-wide problem that affects the entire user community, a representative will contact you as soon as possible.
